Mental Health Resources in Massachusetts

Finding mental health support can feel overwhelming, especially during a difficult time. This guide highlights starting points for people in Massachusetts living with mental illness, as well as families, friends, and caregivers.

If you are in crisis

Call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. If there is immediate danger or a life-threatening emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.

Where to start in Massachusetts

Massachusetts Behavioral Health Help Line: Call or text 833-773-2445 for free, confidential support, referrals, and connection to mental health and substance-use services. Support is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and interpretation is available in more than 200 languages.

MassHealth members can contact MassHealth customer service or their health plan to ask about covered behavioral-health services, therapists, psychiatry, counseling, and transportation options. Community mental health centers, outpatient clinics, hospitals, and local nonprofit organizations may also offer sliding-scale or free services.

Helpful national resources

NAMI HelpLine: Call 1-800-950-NAMI (6264) or visit nami.org for education, support, and help finding local resources. SAMHSA’s National Helpline is 1-800-662-HELP (4357) for treatment referrals and information about mental health and substance-use services.

A gentle next step

You do not have to figure everything out at once. Consider calling a helpline, contacting a trusted person, or asking a primary-care provider for a referral. When contacting a service, ask about eligibility, cost, insurance, wait times, language access, and whether telehealth is available. Resources and phone numbers can change, so confirm details with the organization before relying on them.
